The threat of a strike looming over Le Massif de Charlevoix ski resort is growing as the employer recently broke off negotiations for the renewal of the collective agreement, according to the union representing some 300 workers. The workers are threatening to walk off the job on Jan. 2 if no agreement is reached by then. With just a few days to go before this possible work stoppage and the expiration of the collective agreement, the employer has decided to leave the negotiating table, according to a statement on Tuesday by the Syndicat des travailleuses et travailleurs du Massif, affiliated with the CSN. It said that a follow-up meeting scheduled for Monday was canceled by management, which “refused to reconsider the union’s offer,” as was another meeting scheduled for Tuesday. The union stated that no negotiation meetings are scheduled between now and Friday. The president of the Syndicat des travailleuses et travailleurs du Massif, Annick Simard, “denounced the employer’s lack of willingness.” “The union has reached out, sent clear signals, and repeated its warnings. Despite this, the employer has chosen to walk away from the table. The members never intended to go on strike. Unfortunately, the employer is forcing our hand with its blatant unwillingness to negotiate,” she said in a statement. The union also accuses Groupe Le Massif of making “a conscious decision to plunge the region into an avoidable labor dispute.” In the event of a walkout, the company says it will “make every effort to maintain quality service and minimize the impact on the experience and safety.” “However, certain operations may be adjusted depending on the ability of our management staff to ensure activities continue,” it states on its website.
