Coroner identifies body pulled from the river as missing teen who fell through the ice

The Montreal police confirmed on Friday that the body discovered on the shores of Rivière-des-Prairies in Île-Bizard was the 18-year-old man who fell through the ice with his friend in March and had been missing.

Hassoun Choui’s family and friends were calling on authorities to continue searching for the young man after he went missing on March 26.

A body was pulled from the river on Thursday, and the coroner confirmed his identification today.

“We are assisting the Coroner’s Office with the investigation into this death,” the SPVM said in a news release.

Choui and his friend were walking on the icy surface of the river in Montreal’s L’Île-Bizard-Sainte-Genevieve borough when the surface gave way, and the teens fell through.

Choui’s 17-year-old friend was pulled from the river and did not suffer serious injuries.

Police suspended the search, but others continued looking for the teen.
