Man charged after assault in Cambridge, arrest made in Grand River: police

Waterloo Regional Police say a man is facing multiple charges following an assault in Cambridge that ended with his arrest in the Grand River.

Police said officers were called to the area of Coronation Boulevard around 4:20 p.m. Saturday for a report of an assault.

Investigators said officers later located a vehicle connected to the incident and attempted a traffic stop in a nearby parking lot.

As the vehicle came to a stop, a male passenger fled on foot toward the Grand River and entered the water, police said.

“Officers continued attempts to take him into custody. With assistance from the Cambridge Fire Department, the male was safely removed from the water and arrested,” police said in a media release.

A 34-year-old Cambridge man has been charged with 13 offences, including assault, assault with a weapon, failing to comply with a release order and mischief under $5,000.

Police said the accused and the victim are known to each other.
