Downtown Kitchener café reopens with focus on affordability, community

Queen Street Commons Café in downtown Kitchener is back in business. CTV's Rowen Fisler has the sights and sounds from a bustling Saturday morning.

A downtown Kitchener café has reopened its doors after a years-long hiatus.

Located at 43 Queen St. S, Queen Street Commons Café is back in business — serving hot coffee and hearty meals in a beloved community space.

The not-for-profit restaurant first opened in 2006 with a focus on affordability and inclusivity. It offers vegetarian cuisine at a low cost, giving customers access to healthy, home-style meals.

The café also provides people with volunteer and training opportunities to support the work of The Working Centre — a Kitchener community-based non-profit organization.

“What’s crucial for The Working Centre … is that it’s a beautiful gathering space,” said director Joe Mancini. “This really kind of creates a community space where a group can come for free and do their work of community, and the space is totally open to us.”

In March 2020, the café closed its doors at the onset of the pandemic. At the time, organizers at The Working Centre said they were shifting their focus onto shelter, housing and construction projects in an effort to meet the needs of Kitchener’s vulnerable community members.

In 2024, the café underwent renovations that saw a change in layout and upgrades to the community space.

“The Working Centre people did all the work themselves, so that’s partially why it took longer than you would expect,” said Paniz Moayeri, the director of Arise Architects Co-Operative. “It was a very community-oriented project.”

Last month, exactly six years after Queen Street Commons shut down, a social media post shared by The Working Centre announced its reopening — welcoming new and old customers and community members into the new space as it marks its 20th anniversary.

“This is part of liking downtown Kitchener, you have these [places] and connections, it’s like little gateways into the community,” Moayeri said.
