Crew members from the decommissioned HMCS Protecteur were recognized on Wednesday for their heroic actions during a vessel fire two years ago.

Governor General David Johnston presented nine medals of bravery to the members of the Protecteur during a special ceremony in Quebec City.

The ship was on its way to CFB Esquimalt from Hawaii in 2014 when fire ripped through the engine room.

The immediate actions of the members onboard are said to have played a key role in saving the lives of the entire crew and ship from what could have been a catastrophic disaster at sea.

“This kind of recognition recognizes the leadership, the training, the readiness, the experience and teamwork that exemplifies the folks in the RCM,” said Cmdr. Geoff Everts with the Canadian Fleet Pacific.

The HMCS Protecteur served from 1969 up until it was crippled by the fire.

The vessel was towed to Pearl Harbour and then back to Victoria where it was decommissioned.

The ship was towed to Nova Scotia in February where it was dismantled and sold as scrap.
