CFIA warns of possible glass in recalled milk products

Various Canadian milk brands issued a voluntary recall of several products over the potential presence of glass.

Certain milk products sold under the Farmers, Natrel and Québon brands are being recalled due to a possible presence of pieces of glass.

The recall, issued by Agropur, Canada’s largest dairy co-operative, affects several two-litre cartons of milk distributed nationally and in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Quebec, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

The affected products include:

• Farmers 1% chocolate partly skimmed milk (2 L), sold in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island
• Farmers 1% partly skimmed milk (2 L), sold in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island
• Farmers 2% partly skimmed milk (2 L), sold in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island
• Farmers 3.25% homogenized milk (2 L), sold in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island
• Natrel 1% lactose-free chocolate partly skimmed milk (2 L), sold nationally
• Québon 2% chocolate partly skimmed milk (2 L), sold in Quebec

Do not consume, use, sell, serve or distribute recalled products," the food recall warned, adding that items should be thrown out or returned to the place of purchase. "

The recall was triggered by the company. In a statement released Wednesday, Agropur said it notified the CFIA and will co-operate going forward.

“We confirm that the situation is now under control,” the company said. “We are continuing our internal investigation to determine whether any additional measures need to be implemented.”

The CFIA says it is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of additional products.
