A stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway was shut down following a head-on collision between a motorcycle and a truck near Goldstream Park.

West Shore RCMP say a 2002 Suzuki motorcycle was heading north on the highway just before noon when it allegedly crossed the centre line and collided head-on with a 2015 Dodge truck.

The truck careened off the road and went down an embankment, nearly landing in the Goldstream River.

Paramedics rushed four people to hospital with undisclosed injuries, but all are in stable condition.

They included a 52-year-old woman who was riding the motorcycle, and an 81-year-old man, a 79-year-old woman and a 53-year-old man in the truck.

Pictures from the scene show the wreckage of a motorcycle against a concrete barricade.

The highway was closed in both directions on either side of Finlayson Arm Road but reopened at around 2:15 p.m.

Restaurant helps stuck motorists

Meanwhile, a story of selflessness unfolded as traffic backed up on the Malahat.

A Subway worker hand-delivered bottles of water and other drinks to motorists stuck in the sun on one of the hottest days of the year so far.

"Clearly looking around there were some elderly people there, and I have a disability myself," said Diane, who was stuck in the gridlock. "He closed shop, ran across the highway and hand-delivered to us across the median."

She said it was a welcome surprise at a time when many were getting agitated over the backup.
