Warm end to winter and snowy start to spring

The warm spell continues for two more days, although it won’t be AS WARM as Tuesday in the city.

Edmonton hit a high of 15 C on St Patrick’s Day (just one degree shy of a record high).

We’ll get to the 8 to 12 C range for a high this afternoon and Thursday afternoon.

Precipitation timing will be a factor in just how warm it gets both days and I don’t have a lot of confidence in the exact timing of the showers today and/or tomorrow.

It WAS looking like we’d be locked in under rain through this morning in the city.

BUT...that morning rain has developed just north and south of the city and Highway 16.

So, there’s a good chance we’ll see some showers this morning, but the prospect of some heavier and steadier rain for the morning commute looks less likely.

As for this afternoon and evening, we will LIKELY get some clearing. However, there’s also the possibility of a few scattered showers moving through the area.

It’s not like we have a well-organized system bringing rain and so that makes it tough to pin down timing and location.

Elsewhere, occasional showers will push through areas from the Peace Country east toward Cold Lake.

That zone will continue to get off-and-on showers/flurries/freezing rain today, tonight and Thursday.

Friday’s the spring equinox. It’s also the start of a bigger shift in the pattern as some cooler air starts to move in from the north. That’ll shift the precipitation track further south and probably right over the Edmonton area.

With some cooling aloft, the rain chances diminish and snow becomes more likely.

I think we could see rain flip over to snow Thursday night in the Edmonton area and we may be dealing with snow throughout the day Friday.

It’s early, but there’s the possibility for several centimetres of snow in parts of central and north-central Alberta and possibly in Edmonton as well. As always...stay tuned.
