Warm and wet wrap-up to winter

Ahead of a big warm up, the weather could turn ugly across parts of north-central and northern Alberta today.

Edmonton will be on the southern edge of the precipitation zone, so the worst of the weather will likely stay north of the city.

But, there’s a chance of some flurries in the city late this morning, then a risk of some freezing rain midday, followed by showers/rain late this afternoon and this evening.

Areas from the Peace Country/Slave Lake southeast through Westlock/Barrhead and then into the Cold Lake/Lloydminster area have a high likelihood of getting some freezing rain later today/tonight.

Freezing rain warnings may be issued and several millimetres of ice buildup is possible in those areas.

If you have travel plans that put you on highways in those areas this evening or early Tuesday, keep a close eye on conditions and be prepared to postpone (if possible).

Snow has been falling in western and northwestern Alberta through the morning and that’ll move northeast through the day, transitioning to rain at some point midday or early this afternoon.

Surface temperatures in Edmonton will be hovering slightly below 0 C until early/mid afternoon. So, as the late-morning flurries/snow transitions over to rain... we run the risk of a brief period of freezing rain in Edmonton midday or early this afternoon.

Temperatures will continue to rise through this evening we’re not expecting a big cool down overnight.

Sidewalks and sidestreets will likely be icy early Tuesday, but most major roadways should just be wet.

After today, we get a few more chances for showers throughout the week. But, by then, the warm air will have settled in and we’ll stay above 0 C in the city.

Afternoon highs will be around 8 to 12 C for Tuesday-Thursday, with morning lows a degree or three above 0 C.

Friday’s the spring equinox and we’ll see some slightly cooler air drop back in for the first week of spring.

At this point, it doesn’t look cold, just back closer to average.
