Veterans Association Food Bank seeking donations

The Veterans Association Food Bank has become a safe haven for veterans and their families in recent years, but now the organization is in need of support.

The Veterans Association Food Bank is seeking donations as many commemorate Remembrance Day.

“It brings back very challenging memories,” said Ruth Hanus-Winsor, the wife of a veteran.

The food bank has become home for many veterans, a safe haven where they can get food and a helping hand after leaving the military.

Ted Lewis, a warehouse manager for the food bank, served in the military for nearly 40 years. He said helping other veterans get back on their feet is rewarding.

“It helps with my mental issues that I’ve experienced from being overseas and whatnot,” Lewis told CTV News Edmonton.

About 250 families receive monthly hampers from the food bank.

“It’s not easy to have to come and say help, but that’s what we’re here for. We’re here for help,” said Lewis.

As Remembrance Day honours those who have served in the military, the food bank hopes people can serve those vets back with donations.

Canned items, pet food and coffee are their biggest asks.

“Some people may think coffee is not a big deal, but when you’ve got very little going on for you, a cup of coffee in the morning makes a difference,” said Lewis.

The Veterans Association offers a variety of programs including housing and employment supports, financial and psychological aid and financial assistance.

“They’re welcome, they’re greeted with a smile, and whatever the problem is, there’s somebody that can help them,” said Paul Owen, events manager for the Veterans Association who toured Afghanistan in 2010 as a combat engineer. “Seeing a smiling vet walk out the door, our job’s been done … they know they’re not alone and that we’re here to help and support them.”
