One more warm day. Temperatures will climb into the mid-teens under sunny skies in the Edmonton region Thursday afternoon. Most of central, southern and eastern Alberta will enjoy another warm and sunny day ahead of a BIG shift in the weather pattern that starts Friday. In northwestern Alberta, cloudier skies and a chance of some mixed precipitation Thursday. Colder air will dive in across Alberta Thursday night/Friday and it looks like it could stick around right through to the end of the month. Daytime highs in Edmonton and most of central and northern Alberta will go from highs in the teens to highs just a few degrees above freezing starting Friday. AND... we have some stormy conditions on tap for most of the province Friday with rain/snow/gusty wind on tap. The Edmonton area should get gusts in the 40-60 km/h range throughout the day Friday, but gusts closer to 80 km/h are possible in parts of central and north-central Alberta. Rain will start overnight and then transition to wet snow or a rain/snow mix through the first half of the day Friday around Edmonton. While some snow accumulation is possible, I think it’ll be more “wet” than “white” in the Edmonton region. Areas in northeast Alberta have a better chance at picking up several centimetres of snow late Friday and into early Saturday. Most of the precipitation moves out of the Edmonton region by late Friday afternoon as the low-pressure system pushes off to the northeast. Much of Alberta will see gusty and snowy/rainy conditions Friday. So, if you have travel plans, check weather and road conditions before heading out. We’ll get some clearing for Saturday and some sunny breaks on Sunday in Edmonton and area. It’ll still be breezy Saturday (gusts near 30 km/h), but not AS windy as Friday in the city. Sunday should be calmer. Looking long range: Daytime highs will sit in the 1 to 5 C range through the weekend and into next week. Most of the modelling indicates that temperatures will stay in that range through to the end of October. However, there IS an outlier model that pushes daytime highs closer to 10 C toward the end of next week. So... while I think it most likely that we’ll remain stuck in the cool air - there’s a chance we get a bit of a warm-up to close the month.
