Organizations across Alberta are preparing for Remembrance Day, but this year with heavier hearts in the wake of the fire at CFB Wainwright that killed four and injured dozens of other soldiers during a training exercise. Every year, a Lest We Forget musical tribute is put on by the Royal Canadian Legion and the Cosmopolitan Music Society. But concerts this year will start off with a moment of silence to remember those killed and injured in the fire on Oct. 17. “With many members being in local hospitals here, there are families in town while their loved ones are in hospital recouping,” said veteran William Trefry with the Lest We Forget Committee. “We would love to welcome them to our concerts.” An adult living community in Red Deer crocheted 750 poppies a few years ago that will be displayed while they fundraise for the families of the killed and injured. The mayor of Wainwright says the support that people have shown has been uplifting. “The perseverance and the strength of their relationship with our community and the strength of this community continue to shine through,” said Mayor Bruce Pugh. Pugh expects the Remembrance Day ceremony in Wainwright to have one of the biggest attendances to date. With files from CTV News Edmonton’s Nahreman Issa
