Piano teacher found guilty of sexually touching former student

An Edmonton piano teacher has been found guilty of sexually touching one of his former students.

Cassius Alleyne, 61, was charged with sexual interference in March 2024 after police got a sexual assault complaint about incidents that occurred during piano lessons between 2022 and 2023.

Alleyne was accused of kissing the girl on the lips and touching her breast, buttocks, and genital areas on multiple occasions.

The victim was nine years old at the time of the incidents.

In her written decision issued on Thursday, Justice K.H. Oviatt found that the girl was credible when she testified about the events both during the investigation and during the trial.

She said she did not find Alleyne’s testimony as credible.

“Mr. Alleyne testified that he was shocked when police contacted him, that he had no prior suspicion of an allegation of sexual misconduct, and that he did not know the complainant was a child or former student,” Oviatt wrote.

“He explained that, upon learning he was being arrested for a sexual offence, his ‘mind went into overdrive,’ and he ‘put two and two together.’ At other points in his evidence, Mr. Alleyne stated that he had no idea it was [the victim] until police told him.”

“Overall, Mr. Alleyne’s evidence appeared reactive and reconstructive.”

Alleyne will be arraigned on May 22.

In a separate case Alleyne was also charged with sexual assault and sexual interference in April 2025, but those charges were stayed in September.
