Oilers, comics, rock climbing and more in Edmonton this weekend

Stephanie Young, the English voice of characters like Nico Robin from 'One Piece,' will be at the Edmonton Comics and Entertainment Expo.

It’s the last weekend of summer and there is plenty to do in and around Edmonton for people looking to enjoy the outdoors, and indoors, before fall sets in.

The forecast for the next week is still warm, so the summer-like weather will continue into the start of fall.

From Oktoberfest in September to a film festival and comic expo, here’s what’s happening in and around Edmonton this weekend.

Comic books, horror and anime, oh my

The annual Edmonton Comic and Entertainment Expo has a little something for everyone with a plethora of franchises on display. Artists, vendors and celebrity guests will be around Friday to Sunday at the Edmonton Expo Centre, including four special hobbits.

‘Life of Pi’ is showing its stripes for the second weekend of shows at the Citadel Theatre. Based on the novel of the same name, the story of Pi Patel and a royal bengal tiger named Richard Parker is playing until Oct. 5.

The Mosquers Film Festival is celebrating diversity in Muslim communities through film, art and storytelling. The festival takes place at the Winspear Centre; it began Thursday and runs until Sunday.

The film festival is taking a break at the Winspear Friday for the Chopin Concertos with String Quintet. The event features the only two piano concerts written by Frédéric Chopin, which showcase “a world of emotion, elegance, and youthful brilliance.”

The subject may be smaller, but the interest is large at the Miniature Enthusiasts of Edmonton annual show and sale. The event takes place at the Royal Hotel on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Eat, drink and be merry

Prost! Oktoberfest continues at the Fan Park in Ice District, which has been transformed into a “lively Bavarian wonderland.” Visitors will be treated to live music, activities, games and, of course, food and drink Friday to Sunday this weekend and next.

Close by, Chinatown After Dark promises to mix a traditional Chinatown night market with food sampling. It’s taking place on Saturday in the Alley behind China Marble Restaurant from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Edmonton is celebrating its 163 community leagues with dozens of events happening throughout the weekend. Community League Day is Saturday, but events are happening this weekend and next across the city.

Prairie Gardens is hosting its Fall-o-Ween Festival, including train rides, a sunflower maze, games, petting zoo and more. The festival starts Saturday and goes until Sept. 28.

Canadian Comedian Drew Behm is bringing his viral Alberta accent to The Comic Strip at West Edmonton Mall for a few laughs. The show is on Sunday at 7 p.m.

High flying and climbing

The Alberta Aviation Museum is giving people the chance to climb in and see what it’s like to be in the cockpit of more than 20 historic aircrafts. The family-friendly event, Open Cockpit Day, runs Saturday and the museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For those who would rather climb high than imagine soaring through the clouds, Climb YEG is hosting Rocktoberfest on Saturday at Louise McKinney Riverfront Park. The event, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., promises to be fun for experienced and first-time climbers.

In Leduc, visitors will have the chance to see a number of big vehicles at western Canada’s largest truck show, the 6th annual Lesco Distributor’s Pro Show n’ Shine. The event is happening Friday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Leduc West Antique Society.

Think you can take on the University of Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas? Well, you can find out at the Family Fun Frenzy taking place at the university on Saturday. The event is part of U of A Days, which also included a sticker scavenger hunt, bus tour and more.

Saturday is also Edmonton Oilers Fan Day, which includes the Oilers locker room sale, photos with Oilers alumni and a chance to see training camp practice. The event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Ice District and fans will have the chance to see the unveiling video of the new Oilers alternate Jersey.
