Edmonton skies often serve as a vast canvas for the occasional grand cloud formation, inspiring one artist to materialize them in the work A Visible Mass. Created by artist Sanaz Mazinani, A Visible Mass is a series of 22 colourful mirrored sculptures inspired by clouds seen over Edmonton that are being installed in downtown’s O-day’min Park. Edmonton residents contributed photographs of clouds that were abstracted into the final sculptures that are coloured in hues of the sky from dawn to dusk. “In A Visible Mass, the nebulous nature of clouds – their structural composition of tiny individual particles and how they form into a unique and grand whole – echoes our society structures,” says a description of the public work by the Edmonton Arts Council (EAC). “What happens when many people join together to start a movement? How can our communal gathering in public space activate the world around us?” The EAC will hold an event unveiling the art at O-day’min Park on Aug. 29 along with Alberta Craft’s opening event of its free Craft Community series.
