Man run over and killed by stolen van at northern Alberta gas station

Police are trying to identify a driver after a man was killed in a hit-and-run at a gas station in northern Alberta.

The victim was found at 4:23 a.m. on Thursday at the gas pumps of a Petro Canada on 78 Street in Peace River.

Mounties say surveillance video from the area shows a person stealing a minivan and running over the victim, leading to his death.

The victim was hit about two hours before police were called.

The stolen van has since been recovered, but police are still searching for the thief.

The van is described as a red 2005 Dodge Caravan taxi with Alberta licence plate L98636.

It has the name of a taxi company on the door in white letters and a white taxi lamp on the roof.

The thief was wearing a black jacket, blue jeans, a black t-shirt with a white decal, black boots, and mismatched gloves – one black and one grey.

Anyone with information about the thief or the movements of the van between 2 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Thursday is asked to contact Peace River RCMP at 780-624-6611.
