Gas, food delivered to drivers stranded south of Fort McMurray due to road conditions

Road conditions caused multiple crashes that stranded commuters and prompted a highway closure south of Fort McMurray, Alta., during a snowstorm on Thursday.

As of Friday morning, travel was not recommended for about 100 kilometres of Highway 63 between Crow Lake Provincial Park and Fort McMurray International Airport, according to 511 Alberta.

Travel was also not recommended on Highway 881 from Margie to Highway 63.

It was not known how many people were stuck on the highway overnight, nor how soon authorities would be able to clear the area.

Multiple crashes were reported to Mounties in the region, including multiple semis that were stuck.

One semi blocking northbound traffic on Highway 63 near Sand Tiger Lodge left traffic at a standstill.

As there was no timeline for the highways to reopen, emergency services delivered food and gas to commuters who were stranded.

It’s not known if anyone was injured.
