Police in the Comox Valley are trying to figure out how a cyclist ended up dead in a ditch.

The 67-year-old man was discovered Wednesday in the 2000-block of Left Road in Courtenay just before 5:30 p.m.

He was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

A witness says the man was found slumped over the bike and there was no noticeable damage.

Officials say part of the investigation will focus on figuring out how long the cyclist had been in the ditch before he was found.

When the rider was discovered he was wearing a helmet and reflective clothing, according to police.

Anyone who saw the man on Wednesday evening is asked to contact Comox Valley RCMP at 250-338-1321 and cite file number 2018-140.
