Police confirm that a cyclist was struck and killed in downtown Victoria Tuesday morning.

The 73-year-old woman was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Government Street and Fisgard Street at around 8:30 a.m., according to police.

Investigators believe the truck was heading southbound on Government Street when it turned right onto Fisgard, colliding with the woman, who was also travelling southbound.

The vehicle appeared to be a large delivery truck, according to witnesses. Police say the driver is cooperating with them.

Traffic was expected to be shut down in the area for some time as police combed over the scene, at the gate to Victoria’s Chinatown neighbourhood.

Swarms of paramedics responded to the crash and the BC Coroners Service was also reportedly called out to investigate.

Anyone who witnesses the collision is asked to call police at 250-995-7654 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
