A Comox man is dead following a crash between a motorcycle and a transit bus in Courtenay on Tuesday.

It happened around 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Ryan Road and Cowichan Avenue.

A man in his 60s was headed south on Ryan Road on his motorcycle and ran into the side of the city bus that was turning left.

Paramedics performed CPR on the motorcyclist at the scene and rushed the man to hospital.

An air ambulance was called, but the man died before he could be airlifted.

“He was passing everyone in the right turn lane and then at the very end of the right turn lane he tried to make a lane change into the through lane,” said Sgt. Brian Nightingale, Vancouver Island Collision Reconstructionist. “He did go right into the side so he had really no escape route as soon as the bus made the left turn in front of him.”

One passenger on the bus was also treated for minor injuries.

Last week a six-car pileup happened just blocks away at the intersection of Ryan Road and Lerwick Road.

Residents say drivers aren’t getting the message on the busy stretch.

“People just don’t pay attention and of course there are left hand turns out of here and it’s a lot of traffic and it’s hard to do, it’s hard to gauge,” said Sharon Prince, who lives in the area. “They see the traffic on the right hand lane coming up the hill and don’t realize that there’s another car on the outside lane behind them and they think it’s safe to pull out and it’s not.”

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
