Northeast Calgary home destroyed in fire

A home on Taradale Drive N.E. was destroyed in a fire on Sep. 1, 2025. All occupants of the home got out safely, but one man suffered minor burns.

A home in the northeast Calgary community of Taradale was destroyed in a fire on Monday evening.

The Calgary Fire Department was called to the home on Taradale Drive N.E. at just after 5:30 p.m.

They could see smoke and flames coming from the back of the home when they arrived.

Crews extinguished the blaze, but not before the house sustained extensive damage.

All the occupants managed to escape safely, but one man suffered minor burns.

Neighbours called 911 as soon as they spotted the fire, quickly alerting first responders.

“I wasn’t sure if the fire started in the basement or it started on the top floor, but it was really, really bad,” said Rebecca Mathias, a woman who lives in the area.

Second fire in New Brighton

While the CFD was on scene in Taradale, officials say a second fire broke out in the southeast community of New Brighton.

That fire began at approximately 6:30 p.m. in the 100 block of New Brighton Lane S.E.

Crews were met by the occupants of the two-storey home and found heavy smoke and flames coming from a second-floor window.

Firefighters managed to contain the fire to the upper floor of the house and kept it from spreading to neighbouring homes.

All five occupants of that home escaped safely and no injuries were reported.

The CFD is working to investigate the cause of both fires.
