Devin Cooley feels much different heading into this NHL season. Last year, he had to battle for the backup job in training camp. This year, he knew the role was his and says he is feeling more relaxed. “And now all of the pressure, it doesn’t exist,” said the 29-year-old. “All of my energy is going into how I can be the best goalie and figure out what I need to work on in order to get ready for the regular season, and just put all of my mental energy and focus towards that.” “And I can sleep a lot easier, which is nice.” Adds juggling to off-season training Cooley stayed in Calgary and says he worked hard in the off-season. He put on some weight, which he says is important for him, and also added juggling to his training routine. He has been working with former acrobat Tatiana Straathof, who also works with Calgary Hitmen goaltenders. Cooley says it helps him to dial in. “She really challenges the brain and it improves your ability to focus,” said Cooley. “Of course I think that’s going to translate, even if I may not notice it to the extreme.” “It’s the same reason why I started doing math homework. It’s the same thing — it improves your ability to focus and improves your brain’s mental health.” Cooley struggled at last year’s training camp but turned things around once the regular season started. He finished with a 10-10-6 record and a 2.69 goals-against average. Head coach Ryan Huska says it is a luxury to trust both goaltenders. “When you have two guys that you think are capable of winning you games, it’s a luxury to have, and we’re really excited about that tandem that we do have right now.” Othmann earns final roster spot There was only one roster spot available, and forward Brennan Othmann earned it. Othmann is a former first-round draft pick of the New York Rangers. The Flames acquired him last season. He says he had a strong off-season and feels confident in his game. “I feel better with the puck and feel like I understand the game a lot more,” said the 23-year-old. “You’ve played three years of pro now and you kind of understand the routine behind being a pro player and how to prepare yourself every day.” The Flames open the regular season Thursday when they host the Seattle Kraken.
