CMLC announces more affordable homes for Calgarians

Low-income Calgarians could benefit from about 230 affordable homes being built in the southeast community of Albert Park/Radisson Heights.

About 230 affordable homes are coming to the community of Albert Park/Radisson Heights, the city says.

On Wednesday, Calgary Municipal Land Corporation and Attainable Homes Calgary marked the start of construction on the affordable townhouse buildings.

The homes will be built on a nearly nine-acre parcel of land at 1511 34 St. S.E., the former site of David D. Oughton School.

The project will offer a range of one-to-five-bedroom homes and a dedicated green space, featuring a fenced off-leashed dog park, basketball courts and gathering spaces.

In a news release, Jaydan Tait, the president and CEO of Attainable Homes Calgary says, “These townhomes are thoughtfully designed to respond to an immediate and pressing need for housing, while also contributing positively to the Albert Park/Radisson Heights community, with design that reflects and respects the surrounding community and provides publicly accessible green space.”

Attainable Homes was created by the city and helps Calgarians who earn less than Calgary’s average income levels purchase a home.

Families are expected to move in by spring 2026.

East Village Master Plan vision coming to life

The CMLC is also celebrating ongoing progress in East Village with more than 900 homes currently moving through the regulatory process.

Construction on the first 162 of those homes is set to begin later this year, with development progressing on several other parcels in the area.

“The multi-family housing market has been challenged in recent years with rising construction costs and inflation pressures, so we are encouraged by the renewed interest in development in Calgary, particularly in East Village,” said Kate Thompson, president and CEO of CMLC.

“With Calgary’s growing population and housing demand, there is a huge opportunity and need for well-designed and smartly delivered rental and condo homes, and we are delighted to partner with industry to bring this housing to life.”

Potential transit-oriented communities

Following city councils’ approval of $20 million to initiate planning and analysis of potential transit-oriented communities (TOC) on city owned lands along the Red Line, CMLC is looking into three initial sites at Fish Creek-Lacombe LRT Station, Dalhousie LRT Station and Anderson LRT Station.

The CMLC says these locations are great potential to become “well-connected mixed-use communities” with a range of housing options, commercial spaces and new community amenities.

The first phase of community engagement will begin with surveys in late June, with more engagement to follow as site analysis and planning progresses.
