Calgary is one of 25 communities across Canada that will receive a free community soccer mini pitch through a national initiative backed by Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities and the federal government. The project is supported by a $2 million federal investment through Sport Canada and that intends to make the sport more accessible. “We want to remove all the barriers to access for sport and make sure that everybody can participate, because it’s participation that matters most in sport,” Secretary of State for Sport Adam van Koeverden said. Deputy Mayor and Ward 4 City Councillor DJ Kelly said Calgary needs more soccer facilities as participation continues to grow. The Calgary Minor Soccer Association said the smaller playing surface will give young players another place to play and connect with their community. “There are twice as many soccer players here in Calgary, and it’s finally their chance to have that gathering place and really connect with their community,” said association executive director Carlo Bruneau. There is no decision as to when or where the new mini pitch will begin construction. Officials said the project supports Calgary’s long-term GamePLAN recreation strategy, which includes upgrading aging facilities while expanding recreation opportunities across the city. The soccer association also hopes to capitalize on the success of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. “Soccer is surging. We’ve got 35,000 registrations, players playing the beautiful game here in Calgary,” Bruneau said.
