Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas was among the first few voters through the doors at a polling station in Glamorgan on Monday to vote in the Alberta referendum. “This is a really big day for Calgary, for Alberta, for our country,” Farkas said. Albertans are voting on 10 questions. The first five ask about immigrants to Alberta and their access to health care, education and citizenship. The next four ask about Alberta’s constitutional and judicial power in the country. The final question asks if the province should stay in Canada or hold a second, binding referendum on separating. “I think that Calgarians and Albertans understand the weight of this moment. The actual questions themselves are kind of convoluted … I would say a significant challenge that has been identified is the language is very long in some of the questions,” Farkas said. More than 1.3 million Albertans cast ballots by mail or in advance polls. “I want to encourage all my neighbours, every single Albertan — regardless of where you stand on the questions — to get out and have your voices heard,” Farkas said. Polls opened at 9 a.m. on Monday, and will remain open until 8 p.m. Farkas raised concerns about how timely the results will come in once polls close. “I, of course, have full confidence in Elections Alberta, working within the resources that they’ve been given, but it could be potentially days before we get those results.” Farkas said the quicker results come out, the better. “Then we can continue to move on as a city and a province and hopefully as a country.”
