Hyundai recalls more than 600,000 SUVs in Canada, U.S. over faulty airbag deployment

Hyundai has issued a safety recall affecting nearly 44,000 Hyundai Palisade SUVs in Canada due to a potential defect that could prevent side curtain airbags from deploying properly in a crash.

The recall was first posted on Jan. 22 and updated Thursday on Transport Canada’s website.

Transport Canada classifies this as a “Compliance Mfr” recall, meaning the defect was identified and reported by the manufacturer to meet federal safety standards.

Hyundai will notify affected owners in writing, although a full repair solution is still under development, it said.

Owners are encouraged to check whether their vehicle is included by contacting Hyundai or visiting the official recall lookup service.

A similar safety issue has emerged in the U.S., where Hyundai is also moving a recall to a much larger number of its vehicle due to airbag deployment concerns.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Hyundai announced a recall of nearly 569,000 Palisade SUVs because the side curtain bags for third-row occupants may deploy improperly in a crash.

The NHTSA said the affected air bags were supplied to Hyundai by Sweden’s Autoliv - the world’s largest producer of air bags and seatbelts.
