Canadian AI firm Cohere to merge with German company Aleph Alpha

TORONTO — Canadian AI company Cohere has signed a deal with Germany’s Aleph Alpha in a bid to create an independent alternative artificial intelligence company.

Financial terms of the agreement were not immediately available.

The companies say it will function as a transatlantic AI powerhouse, anchored in both Canada and Germany.

Aidan Gomez, Cohere’s co-founder and chief executive, says combining the strengths of Cohere and Aleph Alpha accelerates their global expansion and advances their mission to deliver sovereign AI to countries around the world.

The companies aim to deliver a secure alternative for customized AI in highly regulated sectors.

They also announced today that the Schwarz Group, a German company, will invest 500 million euros as the lead investor in an upcoming financing round.
