Victoria police are seeking witnesses of an early morning hit-and-run that led to the seizure of dispensary-bound marijuana.

Police say early Monday morning, officers saw a vehicle run a red light at View and Douglas streets in the city's downtown core.

The driver took off and eventually collided with another vehicle, resulting in non-life threatening injuries to that driver.

Officers found the man a short distance away after he allegedly tried to hide two large boxes of cannabis that were destined for a storefront dispensary.

The federal government is in the process of legalizing recreational cannabis but storefront dispensaries are still considered illegal, though some cities including Victoria have opted to licence such businesses.

The man faces possible charges related to trafficking, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and flight from police.

Investigators say they'd like to speak to anyone who saw a newer, grey BMW driving the wrong way on Yates Street between Douglas and Blanshard streets between 8:30-9:00 a.m. Monday.
