NHL’s Florida Panthers select Penetanguishene prospect 48th overall

A Penetanguishene kid has had his name called for the chance of a lifetime.

Left-handed centre Ryder Cali of the OHL’s North Bay Battalion had his name called at number 48 of the 2026 NHL Draft by the Florida Panthers.

Born in Switzerland in 2008, Cali moved to the Cayman Islands before settling in Penetanguishene at seven-years-old.

“Your success inspires young athletes across Penetanguishene,” the town of Penetanguishene said in a post on social media, congratulating the 20-year-old following his draft selection.

“We can’t wait to cheer you on as you take this next incredible step in your hockey career,” the town added.

Cali is listed at six foot two inches tall and weighing over 200 pounds, he was drafted by the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in 2024.

Cali’s mother played professional women’s hockey in Switzerland.

In a press conference held after his draft selection, the six-foot-two centre says he was coached by his mother for much of his career before playing junior hockey.
