Newmarket renames Frank Stronach Park following sexual assault convictions

After the namesake of a park in Newmarket was convicted of sex crimes, the town has opted for a new name.

Frank Stronach Park in Newmarket is located at 850 Memorial Circle, in the centre of a residential neighbourhood.

On Friday, the 93-year-old Stronach was found guilty on two counts of sexual assault, dating back to an incident in the 1980s.

“Council concluded that, given these convictions, it is no longer acceptable for a town park to bear his name,” the Town of Newmarket said in a statement shared with CTV News.

The town confirmed to CTV News that the park will be renamed Veterans’ Park, which “reflects the street names in that area”.
