Porter reduces fuel surcharge for rewards flight redemptions as fuel prices begin to ‘normalize’

A drop in fuel prices has prompted Porter Airlines to reduce a surcharge it tacked on to rewards flight redemptions earlier this year.

A temporary $40 surcharge was implemented back in March for all VIPorter reward flight redemptions to “offset global aviation fuel prices,” the airline said.

“We also said that our goal was to remove this surcharge when the price of fuel reaches levels seen at the beginning of this year. Today, we are taking a step in this direction,” Porter said in a written statement.

The fuel surcharge has been halved to $20 for rewards flights as “the fuel market has started to normalize.”

Fuel prices have been in constant flux since the start of the war in Iran in February and although both sides appear close to reaching a deal to end the conflict, experts have warned that it will likely be months before the market stabilizes.

Porter said the surcharge reduction comes into effect on Tuesday for all new bookings.

“Fuel prices remain approximately 50% above last year,” the statement continued.

“We are monitoring the situation and will make further adjustments as conditions change.”
