Every October, the Barrie Film Festival puts on a presentation of award-winning cinema right here in the city. With the final weekend of the festival upon us, here’s what you can see. You can catch Late Fame twice this weekend. The movie is about a post office employee whose early book of poetry is rediscovered by a group of aspiring artists. Echoes from Halifax, The Furies and You Had To Be There are all Canadian films. Once Upon a Time in a Cinema is about a cinema owner who gets their moment of glory when a packed show unravels into chaos and community unity. Renoir is a historical film about a young girl coping with a terminally ill father and distracted working mother. Mouse centres around a shy teenager and her best friend who is upended just before their final year of high school. Blue Heron is based on a family of six who settles into their home on Vancouver Island. Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty! follows a Tokyo ballroom dancer, featuring Oscar nominee Rinko Kikuchi. If you’re into short films, the Barrie Film Festival says the Short Film Showcase and Awards is an audience favourite. It will present a series of short films by regional, national and international filmmakers, with all of them up for awards.
