Gender of body found in Thornton June 2 is determined: OPP

Police are still investigating a death in Thornton following DNA confirmation of the dead person’s gender.

Nottawasaga Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to a home near 10th Line and 10th Sideroad in Thornton after human remains were located June 2 shortly before 11:30 a.m.

Due to the condition of the recovered human remains, specialized forensic testing, including DNA analysis, was undertaken to assist with identification.

The results have confirmed that the remains belong to an adult male, revising earlier preliminary findings that suggested the individual was female.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed.

The OPP is requesting the public’s assistance and is asking anyone with information that may assist this investigation, including observations of suspicious circumstances or activity in the area, to contact police.

Residents will see an increased police presence in the area as the investigation continues.

Under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, the Nottawasaga OPP Crime Unit is working with the Office of the Chief Coroner and Ontario Forensic Pathology Service. Assistance is being provided by the OPP’s Emergency Response Team, Canine Unit and Forensic Identification Services.
