Known to television audiences as Sydney Shandon on Sullivan’s Crossing, actor and activist Lindura is stepping into a different kind of spotlight this weekend in Halifax. The Canadian performer, who co-founded Plastic Free Toronto, is bringing her passion for sustainable living to Carbon Arc Cinema. She has organized a special evening that combines a documentary screening with a marketplace of local vendors focused on sustainability. “When it comes to sustainability, the most important thing to think about is just how connected we all are,” said Lindura in an interview with CTV Atlantic’s Katie Kelly. The feature film The True Cost explores the hidden impacts of fast fashion on both people and the planet. But Lindura says the event is not just about raising awareness of the problem. “This event is about more than the problem – it’s about the solutions too.” Nine sustainable vendors will showcase their work during the event, giving attendees a chance to shop and hear directly from designers about their process. Among them is Halifax creator Jaaziel, who reworks discarded materials into wearable art through his brand Stokeduds. “A lot of the pieces I make are donated,” Jaaziel said. “The ones I’ll be showing are my best pieces - the ones with the most story behind them.” For Lindura, highlighting creators like Jaaziel was a driving force behind hosting the event in Halifax. “I was looking in my wardrobe and realized how many cool pieces were from here,” said Lindura. “There are so many people doing good things locally.” Lindura hopes the evening will inspire Maritimers to think differently about the clothes they wear and the people who make them. “That’s one of the really special things about Halifax – it’s very community-oriented,” said Lindura. “The more we can support and grow our own communities, the more sustainable we will all become.”
