Halifax rock band Sloan has been making music together for more than 30 years, and with their 14th studio album, “Based on the Bestseller,” the group is showing they still have plenty of creativity left. The band formed in 1991, and all four original members – Chris Murphy, Jay Ferguson, Patrick Pentland and Andrew Scott – still write, sing and perform together. Guitarist and vocalist Ferguson says one of the biggest reasons they’ve lasted so long is how they work as a team. “Everybody in the band writes and sings,” Ferguson said in an interview with CTV News Atlantic’s Katie Kelly. “It’s not like there’s one or two people who don’t get a say. And we share everything equally – even the money – which helps keep things running smoothly.” That teamwork has kept the group together through 34 years, 14 albums and tours across Canada and beyond. “Somebody might not like my songs but love certain songs by Andrew,” said Ferguson. “Sloan has something for everybody.” “Based on the Bestseller” adds a fun, movie-themed twist to Sloan’s familiar sound. “We actually had the movie poster printed and hung it at a cinema in Toronto,” said Ferguson. “Everything around the record ties into the idea of film.” From upbeat rockers to old-school piano songs, the album highlights what fans have loved about the band for more than three decades: four friends making music together and having fun doing it.
