Halifax Regional Police says “swatting” was behind the threat at a high school in the city Thursday afternoon. Police say a man called the school claiming to be on school property with a weapon around 12:25 p.m., leading to the school going into lockdown. After searching for the man, police say they found no evidence to support the threat, and the lockdown was lifted around 3:45 p.m. “With assistance from law enforcement agencies in Florida, members of the General Investigation Section determined the initial call was made from outside of Canada and was a hoax,” reads a Friday news release from the RCMP. “This type of incident is known as ‘swatting.’ Swatting involves making a false report to police with the intent of prompting a significant police response.” Police say the investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been laid at this time.
