Protesters rally against Ottawa’s pilot project to buyback firearms

A protest against Ottawa’s gun buyback program was held in Sydney, N.S., on Thursday.

There was a midday protest in Sydney, N.S., Thursday over Ottawa’s plan to buy back firearms from individual owners.

Several dozen people protested outside Cape Breton Regional Police headquarters over the noon-hour.

The police station was closed to the public as a result.

Last month Ottawa announced a buyback of certain firearms with a pilot project that will be open to eligible firearm owners in select areas of Cape Breton.

Ottawa has outlawed approximately 25,000 types of guns, insisting they belong on the battlefield not in the hands of hunters or sport shooters.

Starting Thursday, eligible firearms owners can file a declaration of interest through a web portal.
