N.S. RCMP seizes 1.6 million unstamped cigarettes from U-Haul truck

Nova Scotia RCMP seized around 1.6 million unstamped cigarettes from a U-Haul truck on Sunday.

The Nova Scotia RCMP says it seized roughly 1.6 million unstamped cigarettes from a U-Haul truck near Havre Boucher on Sunday.

Police say an officer conducting traffic patrols on Highway 104 spotted the truck veering in and out of its lane around 4:54 p.m. The officer stopped the vehicle and inspected it, according to an RCMP news release.

“Through an inspection of the vehicle, the officer observed a large quantity of what was believed to be cartons of unstamped tobacco,” the release reads. “The driver was safely arrested under the Excise Act and the vehicle was seized.”

Police say they seized 160 cases of unstamped cigarettes after they searched the truck.

The unnamed 18-year-old male driver from Riverview, N.B., was released and is scheduled to appear in Antigonish provincial court at an unspecified date. He is expected to face charges under the Excise Act and the Nova Scotia Revenue Act.

The investigation is ongoing.
