Nova Scotia locals celebrate St. Patrick’s Day despite rainy weather

Maritimers enjoyed St. Patrick’s Day despite the weather: from going to pubs to fun for the whole family.

Rain and heavy winds didn’t stop St. Patrick’s Day celebrations across Halifax, with some people lining up outside bars before sunrise to mark the occasion.

By 5 a.m., crowds had already gathered, waiting to secure a spot inside for live music and drinks.

“We’re just waiting for the place to open to get our spot so we can see some great music, spend time with friends,” said one person standing in line. “You’ve got to get here early if you want to get in the door.”

“I bought two umbrellas yesterday, owned one for the first time in my life today,” another person said. “Even though it’s a little bit windy, we’re happy to stand out here for an hour and get in and have a nice creamy pint.”

While bars filled early, families across the city marked the day with a range of activities tied to March Break.

At libraries, children took part in themed games and crafts, including building leprechaun traps.

“I called it the leprechaun house trap,” said one child. “When the leprechaun goes in there, it gets scared by the trap.”

Another child said their favourite part of the day was “all the games.”

The Steele Wheels Motor Museum opened its doors for both March Break and St. Patrick’s Day, drawing dozens of visitors.

“We’ve been blessed with 80 people through the door already, so it’s been a good day,” said curatorial associate Collin Flanagan.

The museum leaned into the theme with music, activities and green-themed refreshments for both adults and children.

“We’ve got the tunes going, beers that can be green, mocktails that can be green, cars that are green. It’s a good time,” Flanagan said.

He added the space offered families a place to spend the day indoors while still celebrating.

“It’s just a place you can get out of the rain and have a great day.”

For some, the museum was just the beginning of a full day of festivities, with plans to head out later for dinner and drinks.

Celebrations are expected to continue into the evening, as people across the city mark the holiday.
