New grocery stores eye N.S., raising hopes for lower food prices

FreshCo, a Sobeys-owned chain, is set to open in Halifax, adding another brand to the discount grocery category in the area.

Grocery shoppers in the Halifax area may soon have more options as new discount stores move into the region, a shift experts say could improve access and help stabilize prices.

A new No Frills location is slated to open in Dartmouth, N.S., with “coming soon” signs already posted at the site.

There is also growing speculation that FreshCo could move into another former retail space.

Experts say the arrival of additional grocers in a market long dominated by a handful of major players could reshape the competitive landscape.

“The grocery industry in Canada is quite interesting because it’s quite small. It’s dominated by four or five major players, so any time another player comes in, it’s going to alter the consumer landscape,” said Ed McHugh, NSCC business professor.

The expansion is particularly significant for a region that has historically had fewer discount grocery options compared to central Canada.

“This is certainly good news,” said Sylvain Charlebois, director of Dalhousie University’s Agri-Food Analytics Lab. “We need more stores, we need more discount stores. It will increase access and likely affordability also.”

Charlebois added that more stores can help reduce “food deserts,” where limited access to grocery options can drive prices higher.

“You tend to see food deserts in different parts of the region… so the more stores have, the better off we are,” he said.

While discount chains like No Frills are known for aggressive pricing strategies in other provinces, experts caution the impact in Nova Scotia will likely be gradual.

“What will happen is the market will be a little elastic here and you’ll see some price change at some of the other competitors,” McHugh said.

Charlebois echoed that sentiment, noting shoppers shouldn’t expect immediate price drops.

“It’s not like the Walmart or Costco effect, where you’ll see prices drop for a while,” he said, adding that the increased competition is more likely to put pressure on prices to stabilize over time.

Location is also expected to play a key role in the success of these new stores, with accessible, high-traffic areas likely to attract more customers.

For now, construction is still underway and details remain limited. However, as grocery prices continue to weigh more on household budgets, the prospect of more discount options is being closely watched by consumers across the region.
