‘I’m one of the lucky ones’: Maritime musician Cory Tetford reflects on music career

Newfoundland musician Cory Tetford reflects on his lengthy and prolific career.

For decades, Cory Tetford has been a constant on the Atlantic Canadian music scene.

Originally from Newfoundland and Labrador, many first came to know Tetford as a member of the band Crush. Since then, he has remained busy as a songwriter, producer, engineer and touring musician, working alongside some of the country’s most respected artists.

Tetford credits his longevity to his love of the work.

“I think I chalk it up to stubbornness,” said Tetford in an interview with CTV Atlantic’s Katie Kelly. “I love to work. I love music and I love the people that I get to hang out with.”

Tetford currently plays guitar with Alan Doyle, while also producing and mixing records out of his own studio and performing his own material.

“It’s a life of music,” said Tetford. “I’m one of the lucky ones, I think.”

This month, Tetford is playing three sold-out shows at The Carleton in Halifax, a venue he says holds a special place for him.

“This is my favourite room to play in the country - and likely the world,” said Tetford.

Fans continue to return not just for the songs, but for the stories, humour and intimacy that define a Cory Tetford show.

“I would say I am grateful,” said Tetford. “Really, from the bottom of my heart.”
