A Halifax beach is closing early for the season due to a possible blue-green algae bloom. Kearney Lake Beach on Saskatoon Drive is currently closed for recreational use. Halifax Parks & Recreation says all swimming lessons have been cancelled. The beach typically has lifeguard supervision from July 1 to Sept. 1. “Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) are naturally occurring in freshwater environments and may grow when weather conditions are calm and warm. Some types of blue-green algae produce toxins which can pose a risk to people and pets,” reads a news release from the Halifax Regional Municipality. Water users should avoid consuming water and any fish from the lake. People should also not let their pets consume any blue-green algae material. People are also being asked to avoid using the Kearney Lake Beach area while testing is underway.
