Faithful gather in Halifax for Good Friday procession

Christians gathered in downtown Halifax to mark Good Friday with the Way of the Cross procession.

Parishioners were led through the Stations of the Cross in a procession that included reflections, readings, prayers and songs.

“We do the walk to connect the story of Jesus with issues of justice and mercy in our society,” said Rev. Kate Heichler, the Assistant Priest of the Cathedral Church of All Saints.

The procession began at St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica and made stops at the provincial courthouse, the public library, Spencer House, an elementary school, Victoria Garden Hospital complex and concluded in front of the Cathedral.

“I was pleased that people from both Cathedrals came as well as some people who just joined us along the way,” said Heichler. “It was wonderful to see this community of people who did not know each other coming together for this spiritual experience.”

Good Friday marks the day Christians believe Jesus was crucified and is one of the holiest and most sacred days in the Christian faith. Good Friday is part of a three-day period that commemorates the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and culminates on Easter Sunday.

“Good Friday is the day that we remember the events that lead to Jesus’ death and that is the heart of the Christian story. So Good Friday is essential in our faith,” said Heichler.

Other processions took place in cities across the globe and in Canada.
