A new electric water taxi service is now operating on Halifax Harbour, offering passengers a new way to travel between waterfront destinations and take in views of the city. The service, operated by Flyteboat, launched this week from Cable Wharf, with trips including harbour tours and routes to Georges Island and other points within the harbour. Chris Watters, founder of Flyteboat, said the idea is to make the harbour more accessible for both residents and visitors. Watters said the electric boats are designed to be quiet, efficient and flexible, with options for shared rides, private charters and on-demand bookings. He said the company plans to expand routes over time, including potential service to McNabs Island and connections toward Fisherman’s Cove. “We really want to make sure that anyone who wants to come out and see Halifax from the water or move around by water can,” Watters said. He added that early interest has already included requests for sunset trips, something the company is now considering adding. On board the vessels, operator Rob Goss said the launch marks a milestone after months of preparation. He said the service offers passengers a different perspective of the city. “It’s a great opportunity to spend time on the water here and give people a taste of the city that you wouldn’t see from shore,” Goss said. Passengers who took part in early trips said the service offered a unique experience. Some described it as a convenient alternative for crossing the harbour, while others said it was their first time seeing Halifax from the water. One rider said the trip to Georges Island stood out, noting how different the landmark feels up close compared to viewing it from the waterfront. Another said the service could be useful for commuting, especially when other transportation options are limited.
