An act of vandalism that damaged dozens of monuments at Moncton’s Elmwood Cemetery is finally seeing some closure. Cemetery staff say most of the 41 monuments that were toppled over during the incident have now been repaired. Many of the stones date back more than a century and are part of the cemetery’s heritage section. Elmwood Cemetery president Jim Rodgers says the repairs wouldn’t have been possible without help from staff and the community. “With assistance from the public financially and physically, and my own staff, we managed to put 37 of the 41 monuments back up where they were prior to the vandalism,” Rodgers said. “It really exceeds my expectations. The public has been amazing, asking if there’s anything they can do. It’s heartwarming that so many people were disgusted by what happened.” Management says they’ve been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and are thankful to everyone who offered to help. They plan to add new security measures when the cemetery reopens in May. Police have not provided any new updates in the investigation and say no suspects or leads have been identified.
