No damage is expected after a 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Port Hardy early Friday morning.

The quake struck about 150 kilometres west of the northern Vancouver Island town at 7:49 a.m., according to Earthquakes Canada.

It struck at a depth of 10 kilometres.

Earthquakes Canada said there were no reports of damage and none would be expected.

It posed no tsunami threat to coastal areas, according to Emergency Info BC.

"We realize that in the past several years this is a region that is active, seismically very active," said Honn Kao, an earthquake seismologist. "Because the location of this earthquake is offshore and it is quite away from populated area, we do not expect that this event will have cost potential damage to infrastructure or to our communities."
