June-uary is living up to its name. Another low pressure system brought cooler temperatures and plenty of rain to the island in the last 24 hours.

Last night’s rain was heavy at times. By 11 p.m., Port Hardy had already received 17.2 mm rain. Around 11 p.m. the Cowichan Valley had a rainfall rate of 16.52 mm/hour! From the moment the cold front pushed precipitation over the South Island around 7 p.m., until 10 a.m. this morning, many weather stations in the Capital Region recorded 8-15 mm.

The greatest amounts of rain were reported along the west coast of the island and through inland communities. Here are just some of the rainfall totals from neighbourhood school weather stations:

The rainy weather is associated with a cold low that is now tracking eastward. Cool, unstable air remains in it’s wake over Vancouver Island, giving us a chance of thunderstorms through island and east Vancouver Island.

Sunny skies are just around the corner. A ridge of high pressure will begin to build in time for the weekend giving us more summer-like weather again, just in time for the end of school and Canada Day.
