I don’t know about you, but I’ve been watering the garden a lot this month. Last night my husband asked me if I could remember the last time we had to water the veggie patch in May.
So I did what any weather enthusiast would do and reviewed decades of climate data for the month of May in Victoria. It turns out May 2015 is the driest May in Victoria in more than 70 years, so far!
Precipitation records at Victoria Airport (where weather data is officially collected for Environment Canada) are available dating back to 1941.
Top 5 driest May’s in Victoria
2015 2mm (so far)
1972 8.9mm
1954 9.1mm
1964 9.9mm
1982 10.7mm
The normal amount of rainfall for Victoria in May is 37.5mm.
If we get a downpour in the next five days this statistic will change, but I don't see it coming. I’m forecasting a dry end to May with no rain through early June. Temperatures are also 3-5 degrees above seasonal average for the rest of the month.
Something to think about as you water your garden this evening.
