A man is in hospital and the province’s police watchdog is investigating after Winnipeg police say the man crashed into a police cruiser while on a scooter. The incident began around 6 p.m. Monday in the Silver Heights neighbourhood. Police said officers were in the 300 block of Lodge Avenue when they spotted a 50-year-old man they said was wanted on multiple arrest warrants. “Officers attempted to arrest the man, who mounted a scooter and attempted to ride away,” police said in a news release Tuesday. While on the scooter, police said the man collided with a cruiser. “He was transported to hospital in unstable condition and admitted to hospital.” The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) was called following the incident because of the man’s injuries. The IIU has not yet released its own statement about the collision. Police said officers processing the suspect found an estimated street value of $1,250 worth of cocaine, $345 worth of methamphetamine, and $415 cash. He is facing two drug-related charges, resisting a peace officer and possessing proceeds of crime, on top of his two original warrants of being unlawfully at large, and apprehension and suspension of parole/statutory release.
