Manitoba Hydro working to restore power to remaining customers after storm

Manitoba Hydro is nearly finished restoring power to all customers following Tuesday's storm.

Manitoba Hydro is nearing the end of fully restoring power to customers following storms that began on Tuesday.

According to a news release Friday afternoon, the Crown corporation confirmed all but approximately 100 customers across southern Manitoba have had their power restored as crews repair equipment, power lines and power poles downed by heavy winds.

Hydro said early Friday, a new outage was reported in Winnipeg’s Windsor Park neighbourhood, impacting approximately 330 customers. Hydro said the outage was caused by tree branches impacted by the storm.

“Multiple crews are working to safely restore power there as quickly as possible, expected Friday afternoon,” Hydro wrote in a news release. “Some of the damaged power lines are in difficult-to-access areas where we can’t use heavy equipment.”

Residents in some areas of the province may see some planned power outages to help ensure safety during repairs. Notifications will be made on Hydro’s social media pages and through direct outreach to customers, but the utility added it’s not always possible to notify people.

In the Balmoral region north of Winnipeg, roughly 80 customers remain without power, though it’s expected to be restored by Friday night.

All initial calls from the storm in the Parkland region and southwest Manitoba are complete, but work to finalize repairs is ongoing.

Work continues in the Swan River area to restore electrical service.
